Organization and financing
ProPublica was founded in October 2007 by the California real estate billionaires Herbert and Marion Sandler to promote investigative journalism in the USA. With an annual budget of $ 10 million donated by the Sandlers, 32 journalists have been conducting extensive research since 2008. As managing editor of the magazine Paul E. Steiger has used this position before the Wall Street Journal held. The largest known research to date for The Deadly Choices at Memorial article took two years to complete and cost around $ 400,000. The article was written in collaboration with the New York Times Magazine and received financial support from the Kaiser Family Foundation .
ProPublica often offers its research to an editorial team in advance, exclusively and free of charge, and then also free of charge with a Creative Commons license for all other media. The press agency Associated Press announced in June 2009 that it would use the Creative Commons license and disseminate ProPublica's research via its database.
