Faisal Shazad ( Urdu فیصل شہزاد; also Faisal Shahzad ; Born June 30, 1979 in Pakistan ) is a Pakistani - American assassin. He was sentenced to life imprisonment as the person responsible for the attempted attack in Times Square on May 1, 2010.

Life

Shazad was from Pakistan and became a US citizen shortly before the attempted attack. He is married and has two children. On June 18, 2010, Preet Bharara was charged with ten counts by the New York City Attorney's Office . His trial began on June 21, 2010 at noon in New York. Shazad pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison on October 5.

Shazad had traveled regularly to the United States since 2001 and studied computer science at universities there . He was granted US citizenship in 2009 and lived in Bridgeport with his wife and two children . Shazad's father, Bahar ul-Haq, was an Air Marshal and Deputy Director of Civil Aviation of Pakistan in the 1990s. His uncle held several senior posts in the Northwestern Frontier Province police and was inspector general of the paramilitary border troops. Shazad completed combat training in Wasiristan and was a supporter of the preacher Anwar al-Awlaki , who is said to have inspired him to do the deed.
