action

season 1

The Secret Service agent Ethan Burke is investigating the disappearance of two colleagues and wakes up after an apparent car accident in the hospital in the mysterious small town of Wayward Pines, Idaho , but cannot reach his manager at the Secret Service, his family or leave the small town. He finds the missing agents, one dead, the other - his former lover - alive and now married to a local craftsman. The community's residents cannot leave the fence-enclosed town and the community is subject to set rules enforced by the opaque Sheriff Pope. If the rules are violated repeatedly , there is a risk of reckoning and a public execution by the sheriff.

Later in the series, Ethan Burke finds out that Wayward Pines is a kind of " Noah's Ark " project by scientist David Pilcher. At the end of the 20th century he had discovered that humanity "reacts" to the environmental changes it has caused itself and that mutations developed that would transform humanity into new beings (so-called aberrations or "abbies") in the long term. When his warnings were not taken seriously by the public, he came up with the idea of creating a modern Noah's Ark. Its aim was to preserve the culture and way of life of humanity. For this purpose he developed - under the guise of front companies - supported by some secret patrons, a cryo program, with the help of which he put selected people, mostly after a real or fictitious accident, into a deep sleep lasting thousands of years. He also built a bunker system near Wayward Pines, which housed supplies, energy supply, etc. After cryosleeping a large number of unsuspecting people, he also put himself, his sister Pamela and around 200 volunteers into this deep sleep. Two thousand years later, Pilcher and his volunteers were first awakened.

As expected by Pilcher, mankind had since perished, the "aberrations", bloodthirsty bipedial beings with outstanding properties as predators, but with lower intelligence compared to humans, have since controlled the world as dominant beings on the planet. The cities are devastated and in ruins. Pilcher now built the artificial small town of Wayward Pines, in which, surrounded by a high protective fence, the cryo-preserved people who were awakened are to live.

In an initial attempt, Pilcher tried to fully inform the now lively residents of the city about their situation, but had to realize that most of the adult residents were not able to accept the "leap in time" of 2000 years and the radically changed environmental conditions. The result was riots, chaos, attempts to escape and suicides. So Pilcher dared a second attempt, this time relying on concealment of the truth, denial of the past, strict rules and total surveillance.

Since then, the adults have had to play their assigned roles or die as rebels. Only the residents' children are initiated into the new situation because, in Pilcher's opinion, they seem to be more flexible and react better to the drastic changes. The children should learn the new “1. Generation ”that will one day recapture the earth. The year 4028 is now written.

Ethan Burke initially rejects the atmosphere of fear and repression that has built up in Wayward Pines, but has to recognize that to protect the “big picture” a certain degree of secrecy is important, to avoid panic and to maintain control of the city. As the newly appointed sheriff, he will take on the task of guarding the city and protecting the residents against dangers from outside and inside during the course of the first season. However, he notes that it is not that easy to get calm without the truth. Just as he himself was too skeptical to submit to the rules and authority of Pilcher, there is a small group of people who cannot come to terms with them either. Their attempts to get out of the city through the outer wall endanger the community.

The situation escalates when Burke tells residents the truth about Wayward Pines at an impending execution. Pilcher, who wants a third fresh start, then cuts off the city's power supply, which deactivates the protective electric fence and the Abbies invade the city. The residents flee from the Abbies in a bunker, the corridors of which lead to Pilcher's headquarters. The youngsters of the first generation, who stand behind Pilcher and his vision, hide separately from the Abbies. At the headquarters, Pilcher orders his followers to kill all residents. When some refuse, a riot breaks out in which Pilcher is shot. Ethan Burke saves the residents from the onslaught of the Abbies by blowing himself up with an explosive device in the elevator shaft. Burke's son Ben is hit in the head and falls into a coma.

When Ben wakes up, three years and four months have passed. The first generation managed to put all survivors back into cryo-sleep and instead woke up new, more controllable individuals. Although Ben is suspected of having morally supported his father's actions and is consequently also held responsible for Pilcher's death, Ben's friend Amy can convince the first generation that he is not like his father; therefore he is not put into cryo-sleep.

reception

Wayward Pines was received largely positively in the United States. Around 86 percent of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were benevolent, and on Metacritic it was 66 percent. The critical consensus at Rotten Tomatoes was: "As weird and strange as possible, Wayward Pines is a gratifying return to old strength for M. Night Shyamalan."

In Germany, the critics were also largely positive. Iris Alanyali said in Die Welt that Shyamalan's series tells a story that, like all good mystery thrillers, is firmly anchored in reality and therefore seems all the more sinister. Wayward Pines have everything that makes a real Shyamalan. In the FAZ Nina Rehfeld described the series as "atmospheric" and "somewhere between Lost and Twin Peaks settled". Robert Gast of the Süddeutsche Zeitung said it was fun to watch Ethan Burke unravel the mystery of the quirky little town, even if this search for the truth could have been made more subtle.

Web series Gone

In addition to the first season, a web series called Gone was produced, which consists of ten roughly three-minute episodes and can be viewed free of charge on foxchannel.de . The script was written by Christopher Leone , who also acted as producer.

Plot
The plot revolves around the scientist Eric Barlow, who is looking for his missing wife Sarah Barlow, who leaves him a goodbye message, leaves him and asks him not to follow her. He then goes looking for her and comes across the mountain project . To find out more, he tries to find various people Sarah has been in contact with in the past two weeks, but they have spontaneously moved away. At a hospital, he is given an envelope with ultrasound scans, which shows that his wife is pregnant and that he is going to be a father. Elena, a colleague of Sarah, finally tells him that he has to go to Idaho to find Sarah's source, Digger . Once there, Eric receives an address from Elena where he is staying. He tells him that many construction workers from all over the country had the task of excavating the mountain. In addition, people suddenly disappeared and did not appear again. Digger gives Eric the name of a town, Lowman , in which the construction workers were housed and which is said to be not far from the mountain. After the conversation, Eric finds an envelope with a USB stick in his car. This contains a video in which Sarah is trapped in a narrow room. Eric is now looking for the mountain near the city and is on his way there; on the way he passes a sign saying Wayward Pines . When he reached the mountain, he received another call from the Pilcher personnel agency ; the caller points out an offer that was sent to him by email. Attached he finds a video of his wife Sarah, who is standing in front of the same goal as him in the video. She asks him again not to follow her. However, Eric ignores the warning and enters the Pilcher Technologies premises . On the premises, he meets the employee who kept suggesting a job offer, Mark Thompson. This leads Eric to a cold chamber in which Sarah is. The scientist tells him that the cold chamber is used to save humanity and that Sarah voluntarily chose to give birth to her child in the future world, in Wayward Pines; The real interest was not Sarah, but Eric, so she was just a lure to get to Eric, who is very helpful for the project due to his skills. When Elena suddenly shows up, Eric realizes that she is in league with Pilcher Technologies and has made him visit the mountain complex. In the end, Eric accepts the job offer to protect his wife Sarah.

Product Placement
The web series uses product placements for Microsoft products quite conspicuously . The Microsoft logo can be seen in many scenes on smartphones or a Surface tablet, but also logos from Bing , OneNote and OneDrive .
