Sazes da Beira is a town and municipality in Portugal . It is located in a valley in the Serra da Estrela mountain region and belongs entirely to the local nature park , the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela .

history

The Romans mined ores here in small mines. The current town was probably not established until the 15th century when shepherds from the area settled here permanently. In the royal surveys of 1527, the place was noted with 65 inhabitants. In 1612 it was already an independent municipality in Sandomil County . After the Sandomil and then Loriga districts were dissolved , Sazes da Beira was incorporated into the Seia district in 1855.

The place experienced a relative boom when the demand for ores increased sharply in connection with the Second World War . In particular, tungsten , which is essential for the war effort , gained importance and was delivered to Nazi Germany by the Salazar dictatorship. After the end of the war in 1945, the community began to decline.
