history

The Roman road from Viseu to Civitas Sena (today Nogueira, a village in the municipality of Seia) passed today's municipality. A bridge has been preserved in the village of Folgosa do Salvador.

The places of today's municipality were officially documented for the first time in the 12th century, in the description of the district of Vila de São Romão , in the royal surveys under Portugal's first king, D. Afonso Henriques . The largest town was Folgosa do Salvador with 29 homes, followed by Santiago with 27. Maceira was the smallest town with only 7 homes and represented the border with Seia County. Santiago became an independent municipality after 1755.

Ten registered monuments are among the numerous historical buildings in the municipality . In addition to six churches and chapels and three mansions , the Roman bridge in Folgosa do Salvador should be mentioned.
