geography

The municipality is located in a valley in the Serra da Estrela mountain range , about 20 kilometers from the town of Seia , 80 kilometers from Guarda and 300 kilometers northeast of Lisbon .

history

The listed Roman bridge of Loriga

The region was settled by the Lusitans over 2000 years ago and was part of the Roman province of Lusitania for a long time . The current town was probably repopulated as part of the settlement policy after the medieval Reconquista . Loriga first received city rights in 1136, which have been repeatedly confirmed and renewed, most recently in 1514 by King D. Manuel I .

Loriga suffered severe damage in the earthquake in 1755 , and the development of the textile industry, which was slowly gaining in importance, was initially set back. The place remained an independent circle until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg that followed in 1834 . The place stood on the side of the defeated absolutist King D. Miguel .

Population development in the municipality of Loriga (1864–2011)

In 1855 the Loriga district was dissolved and Seia was incorporated. In the second half of the 19th century, new companies in the textile industry emerged here and ensured relative prosperity. At the end of the 20th century, the textile industry in Loriga then largely came to a halt.

administration

Loriga is a parish ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Seia , in the Guarda district . It has 1053 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) on an area of 36.3 km².

economy

A textile industry developed in the city in the 18th century, but it is hardly of any importance today. With the only ski slopes in Portugal and the special location, winter tourism has become the municipality's most important economic factor. The Vodafone Group is the provider of the Vodafone Ski Resort ski center , which was created in Loriga . Promoted by tourism, several commercial establishments and restaurants also settled in the city. Due to the well-known river bathing beach and the surrounding hiking trails, summer tourism is also important, especially in facilities of the rural tourism .
