history

Finds from the megalithic culture prove a prehistoric settlement. The current town was probably built after the Reconquista as a collection of shepherds' huts. The earliest mentions of Sabugueiro come from the royal surveys under D. Afonso III. (1210-1279).

Sabugueiro has been an independent municipality since at least 1757. At the end of the 19th century the importance of the place grew as a starting point for the emerging scientific explorations of the mountain region of the Serra da Estrela. After the commune was dissolved in 1936 and incorporated into the Seia commune, Sabugueiro was re-established in 1946.
