Paranhos da Beira , mostly just Paranhos , is a small town and municipality near Viseu in Portugal .

history

Anta de Paranhos

A number of Antas - such as the Anta of Paranhos - and other finds from the megalithic culture prove a prehistoric settlement. A Roman bridge and an altar have been preserved from the time of Roman rule .

The present-day town came into being as part of the settlement policy under King D. Dinis (1261-1325). It was known by the place name Paranhos de Cêa , later only Paranhos. It is not known when or if the town was granted city rights at all. The town of Carvalhal da Louça, as the temporary seat of its own district, was presumably given city rights at the end of the 15th century, but here too no documents or any other documented date have survived.

During the Napoleonic invasions in the early 19th century, the community suffered destruction and looting.

On August 24, 1989, the place was raised to a small town ( Vila ) and has since been officially called Paranhos da Beira, in contrast to other places called Paranhos .
