Lapa dos Dinheiros is a locality and former municipality in Portugal .

History and place names

Settlement of the area has been documented since the Castro culture . The present-day village was probably only created in the course of the settlement policy after the Reconquista and was known as Lapas ( port. , Dt. Roughly: rock bulges). The place name is traced back to King D. Dinis (1261-1325). He is said to have been entertained here in abundance by the local population while passing through. When asked how they managed to do this, they are said to have replied “from our funds”. As a result, the king is said to have renamed the place "Lapa dos Dinheiros" ( Lapa of the money ).

The independent municipality of Lapa dos Dinheiros was created in 1988, when it was separated from the municipality of São Romão . With the territorial reform of 2013, both were dissolved and merged in the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Seia, São Romão e Lapa dos Dinheiros .
