Haile Gerima

Haile Gerima (born March 4, 1946 in Gonder ) is an Ethiopian film director , film producer , screenwriter and film editor living in the USA .

Life

The son of a teacher and a writer with his own traveling theater grew up in Ethiopia. From 1967 he studied theater in Chicago , then film in Los Angeles . In 1971 he made his first short film, Hour Glass, about a basketball player.

In 1974 he completed Mirt sost shi amit, the first feature film to be shot in Ethiopia. In it he did not show a positive hero, but portrayed the poverty in the capital Addis Ababa , which one tried to hide during state visits. In 1975 his graduation film at UCLA , Bush Mania , was released, which addressed the growing self-confidence of American blacks. Ashes and Embers (1982) described the problems of a black Vietnam veteran.

His work as a director comprises a total of a dozen productions. As a producer, he was involved in ten works.

Gerima has taught at Howard University in Washington, DC since 1975
