The 500 km race in Mugello 1966 , the Mugello Grand Prix , also known as the Circuit of Mugello , took place on July 17th at the Circuito stradale del Mugello and was the eighth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

For the second time since 1965 , the race on the Mugello street circuit was part of the World Sports Car Championship. With a track length of 66.200 km, a lap on the Circuito stradale del Mugello was the second longest of the season. With a length of 72,000 km, only the lap on the Piccolo circuito delle Madonie of the Targa Florio was longer.

In contrast to the event from the previous year, when there was only one non-Italian among the 55 teams that started, the line-up in 1966 was more international. The race won Gerhard Koch and Jochen Neerpasch on a plant - Porsche 906 . At the finish, the lead over second-placed and single Enrico Pinto in an Alfa Romeo GTA was 2½ minutes.
