The Isuzu Bellett was a lower middle class passenger car produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu from 1963 to 1973 .
The Bellett was designed by Isuzu in-house and replaced the Hillman Minx , which had been built under license until then . The name Bellett means something like "little Bellel ".
The Bellett was available as a two- or four-door sedan, a two-door coupé, a rare two-door station wagon called the Bellett Express and an even smaller Isuzu Wasp pick-up . After General Motors acquired shares in Isuzu in the early 1970s, the Bellett was replaced by a version of the global T-Car based on the Opel Kadett C, which was initially called Isuzu Bellett Gemini , later simply Isuzu Gemini and with the Great Bellett had little in common. A total of 170,737 copies of the Bellett were made.
limousine
The sedan appeared in June 1963, optionally equipped with a 1.5-liter OHV four-cylinder petrol cylinder or a 1.8-liter diesel engine. In April 1964, an OHC four-cylinder with a displacement of 1.3 liters was also offered. The front section received a facelift in 1966, and in 1967 the engine range was expanded to include a 1.6-liter with an overhead camshaft. In the course of another facelift in 1971, this engine was replaced by a 1800 cc four-cylinder; at the same time, the diesel variants were omitted.
GT
The Isuzu Bellett GT, which was presented in April 1964, was a two-door coupe with a 1.6-liter twin carburetor engine and the first Japanese car to be called GT (Gran Turismo). In September 1964, a 1.5-liter version of the coupe appeared; at the same time it received front disc brakes and a modified front section. In September 1967, the output of the base engine was increased and a hatchback body was introduced. Two years later, the 1.6-liter received an overhead camshaft, which was replaced by a 1.8-liter in 1970.
GT-R
The GT-R, more precisely GT Type-R (like Racing = racing), was the racing version of the GT, which was also available for civilian customers. The GT-R, presented in September 1969, had the 1.6-liter machine with two overhead camshafts from the Isuzu 117 Coupé , servo brakes and numerous other innovations. Visually, the GT-R differed from the other Bellett models primarily through the matt black painted bonnet. The GT-R was very successful in Japanese motorsport; it was created in an edition of about 1400 pieces.
Isuzu Wasp
A chassis for superstructures and a pickup was offered as the Isuzu Wasp (wasp) from 1965 . It had a payload of 1 ton and was powered either by the 1.3-liter gasoline engine or the 1.8-liter diesel engine. The Wasp was built until 1972 when it was replaced by the Isuzu Faster .
