From 1976 to 1979 the Gemini had already been sold as Buick Opel in the USA through selected Buick dealers. From 1980, Isuzu imported the Gemini as an I-Mark into the USA, which differed from the Buick Opel through an extensive facelift with new front and rear sections.

A two-door hatchback coupé and a four-door sedan in basic, deluxe and LS versions, powered by the Isuzu four-cylinder petrol engine with 1817 cc or a diesel engine of identical displacement, which was also installed in the Chevrolet Chevette , were offered. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard, and a three-speed automatic transmission was available at an additional cost.

The range of diesel models quickly dwindled to a single version, namely the basic coupé with emaciated equipment.

For the 1986 model year, the I-Mark was replaced by a front-wheel drive model of the same name; by then, Isuzu had sold around 60,000 units of the rear-wheel drive model in the United States.
