The first generation of the Elgrand was available in the trim levels J , V , X , Highway Star and the Rider refined by Autech Japan . The van enjoyed great popularity thanks to the generous amount of space with seven or eight seats and the large number of standard or optionally available equipment details. These include, for example, ABS, single or double airbags, an electric drive for the sliding door, two-zone air conditioning, ultrasonic parking aid, one or two monitors in the dashboard or rear, two sunroofs and partial or full leather trim. In addition, there were several special models that also include a variant with a long wheelbase and high roof. The latter was available as a jumbo taxi with eleven seats, a mobile home or an ambulance .
During the production period, the range consisted of a gasoline engine, a turbodiesel engine and a four-speed automatic transmission, but a total of 4 different engines were installed in the E50. The rear wheels were driven as standard , but all-wheel drive was also available on request.
The Nissan Elgrand E50 was also available as the Isuzu Filly on the Japanese market .

The second generation of the Elgrand, like the previous model, is available in two versions with seven or eight seats, with the seven-seat variant in the second row being equipped with individual seats. Compared to the previous model, the design of the vehicle has been made much more modern and rounded. The front section was bevelled and the bumper adapted to the shape of the radiator grille. The transition to the fenders and exterior mirrors is also fluid, creating a more dynamic look.
In addition, the E51 brought with it further changes to the body, so that the interior could be made larger in all dimensions than in the E50 despite the reduced vehicle height. This was achieved in particular by a vehicle floor that was lowered by 40 mm and designed to be even, as well as a wider roof. Furthermore, the comfort when boarding benefits from this change, as the boarding height has been reduced. With the Elgrand E51, two sliding side doors were offered for the first time, although a four-door variant was still available.
The equipment variants V , VG , X , XL and the sports model Highway Star , which was equipped with an exclusive aerodynamic package and sports suspension, among other things, were available. In addition, Autech offered the Rider model and, under the name Enchante, special conversions for physically handicapped people, in which, for example, a seat in the second row of seats can be electrically swiveled out of the vehicle to allow easy entry. Depending on the equipment variant, many luxurious features are built in, including an LC screen placed in the dashboard or a keyless start system . In addition, there were electric doors with remote control, two-zone air conditioning for the driver and front passenger as well as an independent air conditioning system for the rear passengers, adaptive cruise control , navigation / TV system with two monitors and DVD drive, reversing camera with color image, two sliding roofs, and electric vent windows for the third Row of seats, electrically operated curtains on the sliding doors and other extras available. The exterior color could be chosen from seven different lacquers, whereby two-tone lacquers were also possible. Two other colors were available exclusively for the Highway Star model .
At the start of sales, only a V6 petrol engine with 3.5 liters displacement and a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode were available. The Elgrand is powered by the rear wheels as standard, however, like the previous model, all-wheel drive is available. This normally only directs the drive power to the rear axle, but depending on the road surface it is automatically distributed in a ratio of up to 50:50 to the front and rear wheels. The E51 has a multi-link rear axle and internally ventilated disc brakes all around.
Facelift
A facelift was carried out on Elgrand in August 2004, whereby the Highway Star model received a slight facelift in 2003 and has now been revised again. The styling has been slightly freshened up with other headlights and a new grille, and the side indicators have been integrated into the exterior mirrors. Changed taillights were also installed at the rear and minor changes were made to the interior. New equipment details were also introduced, including Adaptive Forward Lighting , as is also available in the Toyota Previa . In addition, a Bose sound system was now available. Four months later, in December, a new 2.5 liter gasoline engine was added to the range.
In 2007 there was another facelift, which only brought a modified radiator grille on the Highway Star . However, Nissan expanded the range of equipment, including a world first, an all-round view parking aid called Around View Monitor . With this system, four wide-angle cameras, which are positioned around the car in the radiator grille, the exterior mirrors and at the rear, record a real-time image of the entire vehicle environment. The video recording is then rectified by the control unit and shown from a bird's eye view on the monitor in the dashboard. The driver is also supported by ultrasonic sensors that measure the distance to obstacles and issue the respective distance as an acoustic and visual warning.

The third generation Elgrand was introduced to the Japanese market in August 2010 and shares a platform with the fourth generation Nissan Quest . Like the previous model, the E52 is available with either seven or eight seats and also retains the series’s distinctive front look with two-stage headlights and the imposing radiator grille. The E52 is available in the equipment variants XG , Highway Star , Highway Star Premium , Rider and VIP .
The seats are arranged in three rows, whereby the seven-seat version in the second row of seats is equipped with individual seats that, like the driver and front passenger seats, have footrests and armrests. The eight-seater, on the other hand, is equipped with a bench in the second row, which also has armrests and can be folded in a 60/40 split. The third row of seats can be folded down or completely removed in all versions to increase the storage space. The sliding side doors are electrically operated as standard and the tailgate can also be optionally equipped with an automatic drive. In order to further increase the comfort, optimal noise insulation is used, which in addition to the usual measures also includes special acoustic front glazing and tires with low rolling noise. A Bose sound system with 13 loudspeakers and a retractable 11-inch display for the rear passengers mounted on the vehicle roof is also available.
The Elgrand offers numerous electronic helpers such as the parking aid known from its predecessor called Around View Monitor , which creates an all-round view of the vehicle from a bird's eye view on the 9-inch monitor, which is mounted as standard in the dashboard. In addition, a transmission control system ensures optimum shifting behavior, depending on the driving style, and an eco-assistant supports the driver by setting the engine and transmission, including data from the navigation system, in efficient driving.
Two petrol engines with a displacement of 2.5 and 3.5 liters and a continuously variable transmission are available for the E52 . The automatic transmission can also be operated in a manual 6-speed mode. In contrast to the previous generations of the Elgrand, the E52 is equipped with front-wheel drive as standard, but an optional all-wheel drive is still available.
