The President was available with a three-liter in-line six-cylinder engine (type H30) or with a new four-liter V8 (type Y40) developed especially for the top model and served the Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Sato as a company car.

In 1973 the President 150 was replaced by the Type 250. In addition to the three-liter version, there was also a V8 version; however, their displacement was increased to 4.4 liters (type Y44E). A facelift followed in 1982, and production of the 250 ended in 1990.

At the Tokyo Motor Show in late 1989, a new President (type number JHG50) made its debut and went on sale the following year. The new model was powered by a 4.5 liter V-8 with two overhead camshafts (type VH45DE), which had 199 kW (270 hp). Optionally available with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering (HICAS). In addition, a hydraulic, computer-aided active chassis was introduced (similar to Active Body Control ).

The President was derived from the Infiniti Q45, which was mainly offered in the USA , and had a longer wheelbase as well as a modified front and rear end. In 1993, a shorter version of the President appeared in Japan under the name President JS, which was largely similar to the Infiniti. Autech Japan , Nissan's special vehicles department, also offered a 50 cm longer version of the regular President as a “Royal Limousine”, with a partition between the front and rear seats if required.

From 1993 the President was the world's first car with an airbag for the left rear passenger (for an extra charge) (NB: in Japan there is left-hand traffic).

In 1994 there was a minor facelift and the reintroduction of the equipment level Sovereign, which had already existed for the President 250.

At the same time, the second generation Infiniti Q45 appeared, which had nothing in common with the President, but was based on the contemporary Nissan Cima .

The HG50 remained in production until 2002.
