Spurred on by the success of the Toyota 4Runner in the USA, Nissan presented the Pathfinder at the Detroit Motor Show in 1987 as an offshoot of the pick-up that had only been launched successfully the previous year. In the home market, the Pathfinder was introduced as Nissan Terrano and from 1988 under this name also in Europe and other global markets.

While only petrol engines were available in the USA, 2.4 l four-cylinder and 3.0 V6, the 2.7 TD was also offered in Europe. In the USA, the four-cylinder disappeared from the market very quickly, what remained were the two-wheel-drive versions available until the end. In Germany, the Terrano was only offered with all-wheel drive .

In 1988 and 1991, the V6 models with the 95 have been  kW - Motor (VG30i) imported directly from Nissan in the United States and approved by individual approval, thus they usually have the key number "0000" in the registration book stand. In 1991 the revised V6 with 109 kW and the five-door version came onto the market in the same year. In 1995 the new generation Terrano R50 finally came onto the market. In Oceania , the WD21 rolled off the assembly line for two more years, and in Indonesia for the Asian market until 2007.

Nissan Terrano Regulus (1996-2004)

The Terrano R50 was introduced to the Japanese market in 1995 and was originally intended to be built in Europe as well. However, after the success of its predecessor, it was decided to keep the basic design and engines and had a special Europeanized successor created in Sunderland, UK . According to the design plans of the Terrano R50 , the new generation of the Nissan Pathfinder was also sold in the United States . The Terrano Regulus was also based on the R50 generation. It was introduced in 1996 and is only available in Japan. It was offered as a high-quality alternative with better features. In North America, it was offered as the Infiniti QX4 to complement the Nissan premium brand Infiniti .

In mid-2001 the Terrano R50 was replaced by the Nissan X-Trail , while the Terrano Regulus was on offer in Japan until 2004.
