The Nissan SilEighty is a sports coupe from the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan , which was only produced in small numbers in the mid-1990s. It is based on the Japanese 180SX of the S13 series.

history

The origins of the SilEighty can be found in illegally held drift races on Japanese mountain roads. The 180SX, which is equipped with rear-wheel drive and a front engine and is therefore well suited for this purpose, enjoyed great popularity among the young participants in these events. In the course of such races, however, there were often accidents that usually resulted in the front of the vehicle being destroyed. Because of the foldable headlights of the 180SX, the spare parts were very expensive and so many owners replaced their front end with the cheaper Silvia. This is the notchback version of the hatchback 180SX and since both versions share the same platform, the conversion was uncomplicated and could be done with little effort. In a short time, a trend emerged that led to undamaged 180SX being converted to the Silvia front.

The manufacturer Nissan finally became aware of this development and probably produced its own variant together with a tuning company called Kids Heart . In Japan, the 180SX was available in three engine variants as K, Q and J, with the K version being the most powerful model and being equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo engine type SR20DET, which develops 151 kW (205 hp) . This type served as the basis and Nissan built the front of the Silvia on the 180SX, which literally became the SIL via One EIGHTY . In order to create a differentiation from the self-converted SilEighty, the Nissan original was also subjected to an increase in output to 169 kW (230 PS) through changes to the engine control unit and turbocharger. In addition, the chassis got a harder set-up especially for drift races and the rear and side windows were equipped with a SilEighty emblem.

Due to the fact that the SilEighty was inspired by illegal street racing, Nissan kept production numbers very low and only 500 original vehicles were made.
