The Nissan Prince Royal was an automobile specially made by Nissan for the Japanese imperial family . It replaced the Rolls-Royce Phantom V , which was used in the 1960s and at that time replaced the Mercedes-Benz 770 from the 1930s . The Japanese auto industry was booming in the 1960s and the Japanese imperial family was looking for a Japanese automaker that could produce a car suitable for the Emperor of Japan. In September 1965, Prince Motor Co. announced that it would build two such vehicles. In May 1966, Prince was merged with Nissan Motor Co. , and so the Nissan brand name was added to the cars.
Because of the heavy weight of the car, a 6.4-liter V8 OHV engine (displacement: 6373 cm³, output: 256 bhp / 260 hp (191 kW)) and special heavy-duty tires from Bridgestone had to be used. The front wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones and coil springs, the rigid rear axle was suspended from longitudinal leaf springs. All wheels were equipped with servo-assisted drum brakes. A three-stage BorgWarner automatic transmission with steering wheel shift was also installed.
The rear of the car had doors with a rear stop that opened at a particularly wide angle. There were eight seats in three rows of seats. The two middle seats were foldable and were used by security personnel. There was a bar between them. The rear seats were covered with thick upholstery, while the driver sat on a leather bench in a room separated by a window. The double-layered glass windows had curtains. A telephone was used to communicate with the driver.
In 2006 the two cars were replaced by four Toyota Century Royal .
