The Nissan Pathfinder is an off-road vehicle made by the automaker Nissan , the first two generations of which were marketed outside North America as the Nissan Terrano . The Pathfinder R50 was also offered in Europe until 2014 . A facelift came in 2001. From 2005 there was the 3rd generation (R51); including in Europe mainly the 2.5-liter diesel model. From 2005 to 2008 a 4.0-liter gasoline engine model was also offered. The 3.0-liter diesel model was added in 2011. There has been a new model for North America since 2013, which was released in Europe in 2016/17.

Spurred on by the success of the Toyota 4Runner in the USA, Nissan presented the Pathfinder at the Detroit Motor Show at the beginning of 1987 as an offshoot of the Nissan pick-up that was only successfully launched last year . In the home market, the Pathfinder was introduced as Nissan Terrano and from 1988 under this name also in Europe and other global markets.

While only gasoline engines were initially available in the USA, 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6, with the introduction of the 2.7 TD for Europe, this was also offered as an option in North America.

In 1990 there was a facelift, whereby the 4-cylinder engines were no longer offered in the USA and the 3.0-liter V6 now had 109 kW. A five-door version was also launched at the same time.

Another small facelift followed in 1993.

Nissan Pathfinder (2000-2004)

Nissan launched the Pathfinder R50 in late 1995 in Japan, again as the Terrano R50 and in mid-1996 as the Pathfinder in North America. He was initially only with 3.3-liter V6 - petrol engine , 110 kW (150 hp) and four-speed automatic transmission available. From 1998 a five-speed manual transmission was also offered. From autumn 1997 the Pathfinder was also offered in Europe, parallel to the introduction of the diesel engines.

In autumn 2000 there was a facelift with a modified front (bonnet, headlights, grille, bumper), new rear lights as well as white instruments and additional side airbags in the interior. The V6 petrol engine was enlarged to 3.5 liters displacement with now 161 kW (220 PS). The optional manual transmission was omitted. In 2002 there was another slight facelift with a slightly changed grille. The sale of the structurally identical Terrano model in Japan has now been discontinued in favor of the Nissan X-Trail , which became the actual successor to the Nissan Terrano II in Europe .

In the USA, the Pathfinder was replaced by the successor of the same name at the end of 2004 (in Europe in spring 2005).

Technical specifications

The Pathfinder initially had rear-wheel drive with selectable front-wheel drive . From the year of construction 2000 onwards, the all-wheel drive could be switched on permanently (up to 80 km / h) via an electrically controlled multi-plate clutch. The trailer load is 2,300 kg.

Top speeds

  • 3.3 liter petrol engine: 170 km / h
  • 3.3 liter automatic: 163 km / h
  • 3.5 liter automatic: 176 km / h

The standard consumption of the first years of construction was relatively high at 15.5 l regular petrol, the 3.5 liter engine used from 2001 onwards required 14.5 l, but premium petrol. Because of this, and because no diesel engine was available, it did not sell well in Europe.

Petrol engines : 4.0–5.6 liters
(198–230 kW)
Diesel engines :
2.5–3.0 liters
(140–175 kW)

Width: 1849 mm
Height: 1842-1862 mm
Wheelbase : 2850 mm
Empty weight : approx. 2200 kg

The Pathfinder R51 came on the domestic market at the end of 2004, now under the aegis of Renault . The body has been redesigned and the technology has also largely changed.

In the USA, the new model with the V6 petrol engine and 4.0 liter displacement with 198 kW (269 hp) was launched. A four-cylinder common rail diesel engine with a displacement of 2.5 liters and 128 kW (174 hp) is also available in Europe. A six-speed manual gearbox and a five-speed automatic gearbox are available for the diesel vehicles, while only the automatic gearbox is available for the models with petrol engines. The vehicles of the first diesel generation did not come with a diesel particulate filter.

With the first small facelift in autumn 2007 (in which, among other things, the front side indicators were relocated to the exterior mirrors), a diesel particulate filter was introduced. As part of the engine retuning, the rated output was reduced to 126 kW (171 hp). Since the revision, the Pathfinder is only offered with a diesel engine in Germany.

Depending on the equipment, the vehicle has a variable interior with up to seven seats (two additional seats in the rear can be folded out). The Pathfinder is available in three model variants: the more cost-effective versions "Comfort" and "Elegance" as well as the most expensive version "Premium", which comes as standard with leather upholstery, electrically opening glass sunroof and rear view camera. Since autumn 2007 the four equipment lines have been called XE +, SE, LE and Platinum.

In 2010 the Pathfinder was slightly revised again. The front was slightly changed and the output of the 2.5-liter dci engine increased to 140 kW (190 hp). In addition, a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with 170 kW (231 hp) has been available since 2010. It is only available in conjunction with a seven-speed automatic transmission and the highest equipment. At the end of 2013, Nissan wanted to stop production of the Pathfinder R51. There shouldn't be a direct successor in Europe for the Pathfinder. Instead, the Nissan X-Trail has been redesigned from an off-road vehicle to a sports utility vehicle .

Technical specifications

The new Pathfinder has a variable all-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive with switchable front-wheel drive and ESP, which can be locked using a rotary switch. Depending on the equipment, the curb weight is between 2,207 and 2,355 kg. The turning circle of 12.4 m is very large. The trailer load is 3,500 kg.

Maximum speeds:

  • 4.0 liter gasoline engine with 5-speed automatic: 190 km / h; Standard consumption: 18.0 l
  • 2.5-liter diesel engine with 6-speed gearbox: 175 km / h; Standard consumption: 8.7 l
  • 2.5-liter diesel engine with 5-speed automatic: 174 km / h; Standard consumption: 9.0 l
  • 3.0-liter diesel engine with 7-speed automatic: 201 km / h; Standard consumption: 9.5 l

The Pathfinder R52 was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in 2012 . As with the predecessor, the design developed from angular to more rounded SUV styling. The Pathfinder R52 is based on the Nissan D platform such as the Infiniti JX , Nissan Altima , Nissan Maxima , Nissan Murano and Nissan Quest . The Pathfinder R52 is built at the Nissan plant in Smyrna in the US state of Tennessee .

The new model has been available in North America since late summer 2013. For the time being, however, only with the Nissan VQ35DE 3.5 liter V6 petrol engine with 260 hp (194 kW). The Pathfinder is now significantly lighter than the previous generation. There are now no rear door handles on the C-pillar either, as in the previous three generations for safety reasons.

A Pathfinder hybrid drive model will be available from autumn 2013 . The Pathfinder Hybrid has a 2.5 liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with turbocharger and a 15 kW electric motor. The hybrid system has a double clutch in order to be able to transfer the power of the electric and gasoline engine together and to achieve a similar output as the Pathfinder with 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine. The hybrid drive achieves 250 hp and 243 Nm torque compared to 260 hp and 240 Nm torque. The energy of the electric motor is stored in a lithium-ion battery , which is installed under the 3rd row of seats without any disadvantages for cargo or passenger space. A continuously variable transmission transmits the power in both engine variants . The Pathfinder R52 is only offered in North America, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand.
