Nissan MID4

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nissan MID4 is a concept vehicle built in two evolutionary stages by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan . It is equipped with a mid-engine and all-wheel drive and served in particular as a technology carrier for new developments in the sports car sector. The techniques used in MID4 were ultimately also used in some series models such as the 300ZX or the Skyline .

The MID4 debuted in September 1985 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt . Nissan wanted to present the world public with what could be achieved with the company's own technologies. A revised 3.0 liter V-6 engine that originally came from the 300ZX Z31 was installed as a drive. In contrast to the production version, the engine in the MID4 had a DOHC valve train with four overhead camshafts and 24 valves, increasing the output to 230 hp. The engine was given the identification VG30DE and went into production in 1986 in the 300ZR, a variant of the Z31, only available in Japan.

The MID4 also came up with other innovations, for example the first version of the ATTESA all-wheel drive system ( Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All-Terrain ), which was later installed in the Skyline, Bluebird , Cefiro and a few others. For a balanced driving behavior, the all-wheel drive in the concept vehicle was adjusted with a power distribution of 33% to the front and 67% to the rear axle. The first evolutionary stage of Nissan's all-wheel steering HICAS ( High Capacity Actively Controlled Suspension ) was installed in the MID4, which later found its way into the 300ZX Z32 and other high-performance vehicles of the group in a revised form. The study was rounded off by the aerodynamically optimized body, some design elements of which flowed into the facelift of the 300ZX Z31.

In October 1987, a new concept vehicle was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show as a direct successor to the first MID4. The MID4 II resorted to the methods of construction of its predecessor, but offered a refined design and a 330-hp V6 engine with Twin Turbo - charging , the engine capacity of 3.0 liters remained however unchanged. This engine was designated VG30DETT and came onto the market from 1989 with reduced power in the second generation of the 300ZX. The complex ATTESA all-wheel drive system was refined together with the Austrian manufacturer Steyr Daimler Puch and the HICAS all-wheel steering system was also reinstalled.
