The first Leopard (also known as the Leopard TR-X) was introduced in September 1980 and should strengthen the Nissan offer in the upper middle class. The angular body, available as a two-door hardtop coupé and four-door hardtop sedan, had very thin C and D pillars and large glass surfaces. The car came up with a number of innovations, such as a consumption indicator on the dashboard. The Leopard was originally available with four- and six-cylinder naturally aspirated engines of 1800, 2000 and 2800 cm³; In September 1982, a two-liter turbo machine was added as part of a minor facelift, and in 1984 the three-liter turbo followed from the 300ZX sports car in the Leopard Turbo Grand Edition, which was produced in limited numbers.

In February 1986 the second generation Leopard (F31 series) appeared exclusively as a coupé; this car was exported to the USA under the name Infiniti M30 .

Like its predecessor, the new Leopard competed primarily with the Toyota Soarer in Japan . Unlike the Toyota, the Leopard Coupé, which looks very similar to the Soarer, could be ordered with different V6 engines, a SOHC two-liter injection unit with or without a turbocharger (from a slight facelift in August 1988 in DOHC version) or three-liter Six cylinders in suction or turbo design. The top machine developed 190 kW (255 hp). The two-liter turbo machines had a charge air cooler and only the two-liter suction cup was available with a manual transmission.

The Leopard J. Ferie shared the Y32 platform with the contemporary Nissan Cedric and Gloria models.

All Leopard J. Ferie were made at the Nissan Tochigi plant. Production of the third generation ended in June 1997.
