The Nissan Quest is a van that has been produced by the car manufacturer Nissan since 1993 . The first two generations of the Quest were created through a joint venture with Ford Motor Company , which marketed its own variant as the Mercury Villager . In 2003 Community production ended with Ford. Succeeding Ford brought the Mercury Monterey to market, Nissan whereas the quest since 2004 produces in-house.

The first generation of the Quest served in North America as the successor to the Axxess M11 - known in Germany as Prairie - which was only sold in the USA in 1990 and in Canada from 1990 to 1995. It also replaced the Vanette C22 , which was also discontinued in North America in 1990. Due to production problems, Nissan reached an agreement with Ford to manufacture the Quest at their facility in Avon Lake , Ohio . In return, the US company was allowed to sell the van under its own brand as Mercury Villager . Both vehicles made their debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1992 . The Quest differs from the Villager only in optical details such as a different grill and differently designed bumpers and taillights.

The XE and GXE models were available as equipment options for the Quest . Many of the interior parts were taken over by Ford and can also be found in the Ford Aerostar . These include, for example, the radio, the switches for the power windows or the control panel for the ventilation. The Quest offered seven seats and an expandable second row of seats. The three-seater third row of seats could then be pushed forward as a whole and also folded up to provide more storage space. A driver airbag was introduced in 1994 and two years later a passenger airbag was added as part of a facelift . Changes to the exterior and equipment were also made.

Both the Quest and the Villager received a V6 petrol engine with 3.0 liters displacement, which came from the Nissan engine range and developed an output of 113 kW (154 hp) and a maximum torque of 247 Nm. However, before Ford approved the use of this engine in the two models, some changes were requested. The engine was redesigned as a free-wheeling motor in order to prevent mechanical damage if the toothed belt breaks. In addition, an engine oil level sensor was installed and the oil filter was repositioned to make it more accessible. The SOHC engine called VG30E was fitted with a four-speed automatic transmission , which was also developed by Nissan. The first designs of this engine appear to have a design flaw in the crankshaft, as it can break. In 1995 their diameter was therefore increased from 25 to 27 mm.

The second generation of the Quest was launched in 1999. The body was now more aerodynamically shaped and was supplemented by a second sliding door on the driver's side.

The XE variant known from its predecessor was deleted and the GXE model was offered as the new basic equipment. This was supplemented by the sporty version SE and the top model GLE . A facelift took place in 2001, when the Quest was visually refreshed and all models received new alloy wheels . The base model now also had a stabilizer on the rear axle, and the chassis of the sporty version was also improved. The interior was redesigned with new instruments and seat covers, and a more powerful sound system, CD changer and entertainment systems were now available as options or as standard. The front seat belts have also been supplemented with belt tensioners. With the facelift, the length of the Quest also increased slightly, which benefited the cargo volume.

A SOHC V6 engine with a displacement of 3.3 liters and an output of 128 kW (174 hp) and 270 Nm torque was used as the drive . This engine was developed by Nissan and named VG33E .

After the Mercury Villager ceased production in 2002, Nissan developed a standalone van that hit the market in 2004. The third generation of the Quest is based on the FF-L platform , which was also used by the Altima and Maxima at the time. The Quest was produced in the newly opened Nissan plant in Canton in the US state of Mississippi .

The interior concept is characterized by the rear bench seat which, when folded, creates a level loading area. The middle two seats can be folded almost flat. Optional or standard equipment details include a glass roof, two flat screens in the headliner, side airbags in the front, head airbags for all rows of seats, ESP, traction control, electrically operated sliding doors and tailgate, Bose audio system, two-zone air conditioning and parking aid. In 2007 there was a slight facelift with visual changes to the front and the interior.

The V6 engine VQ35DE with a displacement of 3.5 liters , which is also used in many other models, serves as the power unit . In the Quest it has an output of 179 kW (243 hp) and the maximum torque is 328 Nm.

In 2010, the Quest was not offered because, according to Nissan, the production capacity at the Canton plant was needed to manufacture the Nissan NV van .

The Quest models built in 2004 suffered from many quality issues. Most had been fixed by an engineering team specially sent from Japan by the end of the year. Vehicles that have already been sold have been improved by dealers as part of recall campaigns. The Nissan Titan and the Infiniti QX , which also rolled off the assembly line there , were also affected by the quality problems in the first year of operation of the new plant .

The current generation of the Quest was presented at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show . The production takes place in the Japanese Shōnan plant of the automobile manufacturer Nissan Shatai . The sister model Nissan Elgrand , which is based on the same platform, also rolls off the assembly line there . The 3.5-liter V6 known from its predecessor serves as the engine, although it has been revised and now delivers an output of 194 kW (264 hp) to the front wheels . The Quest was made a few centimeters wider than the Elgrand intended for the Asian market. Sales of the Quest began in North America in early 2011.
