Anthony "Tony" Maggs (born February 9, 1937 in Pretoria ; † June 2, 2009 ) was a South African automobile racing driver .

Career

In 1959 he came to England, was European Champion in Formula Junior in 1961 and drove for well-known teams such as Lotus and Cooper .

Maggs made his debut in the automobile world championship in the 1961 season at the Grand Prix of Great Britain and Germany with a Lotus - Climax . However, he did not make it into the top ten either time.

In the 1962 and 1963 seasons , he started 19 world championship races for Cooper - Climax as the second works driver alongside Bruce McLaren . His best placement was always second place at the French Grand Prix .

In 1964 he completed three World Championship races for Scuderia Centro Sud with a BRM P57 . The 1965 season saw his last race in his career in the World Automobile Championship at the South African Grand Prix . For the Reg Parnell Racing Team he started with a Lotus - BRM and finished eleventh.

Maggs was planning a Surtees - Lola (Formula 2) for the next season when he had an accident with a Brabham at a national race in Pietermaritzburg and killed a little boy who was in the area of ​​the track. The South African ended his racing career a short time later and retired to his farm.

Tony Maggs also competed in races for the World Championship for Grand Tourisme cars and in races for the FIA ​​trophies for prototypes, etc. a. at the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1962 together with Bruce McLaren in an Aston Martin, 1963 with Bob Olthoff in a Lola Mk6 GT - Ford , 1964 and 1965 with David Piper in his Ferrari. Tony Maggs retired at his home in Hermanus. He died early June 2009 in a battle with cancer .
