Mugello 6-hour race in 1976

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Porsche 935 , here at the 6-hour race at Silverstone , made its racing debut at Mugello

The Mugello 6 Hours of 1976 , also March Trophy, Mugello 6 Hours , took place on March 21st at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello . The race was the first round of the sports car world championship this year.

The race

With the first race of the sports car world championship in 1976 , new sporting and technical regulations came into force. The FIA wrote out new rules for the world championship from 1976. The brand world championship was held with production cars from Group 5 and, at the same time, a sports car world championship with sports cars from Group 6 . Group 4 was advertised for GT motorsport. With the 935, Porsche had developed a Group 5 racing car that made its racing debut in Mugello. After the quarrels with the team of the Hessian real estate agent Dr. Hermann Dannesberger took over the races at Porsche again. Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass were signed up as drivers . Even BMW sat with the BMW 3.5 CSL a Group 5 car one.

The first argument between Porsche and BMW ended with a clear success for Porsche. Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass had a lead of six laps in the factory car over Bob Wollek and Hans Heyer , who drove a 935 registered by Kremer Racing . The best BMW was the eighth placed 3.5 CSL driven by John Fitzpatrick and Tom Walkinshaw .
