Willi Bartels (racing driver)
Wilhelm "Willi" Bartels (born March 6, 1927 in Plettenberg , Sauerland ; † February 22, 2005 ) was a German racing driver .
Career
Hill climb
Bartels was at home in active mountain racing for 30 years . In the 1970s he was twice European GT Mountain Champion (1971 and 1976). This earned him the nickname "Mountain King".
During his active time, he achieved more than 300 race victories and set numerous course records. Bartels was popular with his fans because of his driving style. A courageous and aggressive driving style was his hallmark, he sometimes drove up the hill climbs at speeds over 200 km / h.
Private
Willi Bartels was the father of Michael Bartels , the FIA-GT driver and long-time partner of Steffi Graf . He died of cancer in 2005.
