Egon Evertz (born November 4, 1936 in Solingen ) is a German entrepreneur, musician, chess player and official as well as a former automobile racing driver and racing team owner.

Entrepreneur

Egon Evertz, who for after the death of his father in 1950 orphans was founded in 1956 in his hometown of Solingen with a starting capital of 300 marks and two employees a small subcontractor of the steel industry . In 1951 he started an apprenticeship at the Ohligs trading company Gebrüder Weyersberg , and completed it as a wholesaler . Before founding his own company, he worked in a company that manufactured welding electrodes .

The success of his company was based on a new method of cold welding . As a result, defective molds could be easily repaired using cast electrodes and did not have to be replaced with new ones after only a short period of use. With this method, steel manufacturers saved considerable sums of money in production.

The company grew rapidly and was able to offer and carry out more and more repairs to wear parts in steel production. Company takeovers were also made to expand the product range. In addition to the acquisition of 1,983 disused Siegerländer copper works the Evertz Group acquired the trademark and the spare parts warehouse of in bankruptcy previous machine manufacturer Klopp . The company currently holds 100 patents .

The Evertz Group owns 20 companies in Germany, the United States , Switzerland , France and Luxembourg and employs more than 600 people.

Egon Evertz is married, has two children and a grandfather of three. His two sons, Dipl.-Ing. Ralf Evertz and graduate economist Stefan Evertz hold management positions in the group of companies.

Musician

Egon Evertz originally wanted to become a violinist , but had to break off his training after his father's death in 1950. At the age of 50 he took up training again and recorded several CDs over the years . Evertz played on a steel violin that is electronically amplified.

Egon Evertz was chairman of the Solingen chess society . During his presidency, the club was German team champion several times and once European cup winner for club teams .

Evertz was used sporadically in the first team, including winning the German team championships in 1971 and 1975 and once each in the Bundesliga seasons 1980/81 and 1988/89 .

Aviation

Evertz operated an aviation company under the name Air Evex , in which he himself was active as a pilot .

Honors

On August 24, 2012, Evertz was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2013 he was awarded the Ring of Honor of the City of Solingen.

Career in motorsport

In addition to music , chess and flying , motorsport was a passion of Evertz. Between 1959 and 1976 he successfully competed in GT and sports car races . It had its first international engagement in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1959 , a long-distance race that was part of the sports car world championship that year . Team partner in the Porsche 356 Carrera was Frank Kalkuhl , who also reported the car. The duo achieved 22nd place in the overall standings and eighth place in the class of GT cars up to 1.6-liter displacement.

In 1960 he secured three German championship titles. On a DKW 1000S he won the German Rally Championship as well as the Touring and Circuit Championship . That the FIA GT Cup in 1960 scoring 500-km race at the Nürburgring he finished as sixth overall. After the birth of his first child, his racing career ended for the time being in mid-1961.

In 1975 he made a comeback and became German mountain champion in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR . In addition there were races in the German racing championship and in the interseries . In 1976 it had its last and most international racing season. Evertz had a Porsche 934 prepared for the races of the sports car world championship in his own racing team and hired a professional co-driver with Leo Kinnunen . The Finn had Formula 1 experience and successfully drove a Porsche 917 for John Wyer’s team in the World Sports Car Championship in 1970 . At the 6 Hours of Silverstone Evertz and Kinnunen achieved a surprising third place overall, which was surpassed by second place in the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen . Evertz and Kinnunen were supported by Toine Hezemans , who was the third driver.

In the Le Mans 24-hour race , Evertz entered two vehicles and four drivers. Evertz and Kinnunen started the race in a Porsche 908/03 . Hartwig Bertrams and Heinz Martin drove a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. After the 908 failed due to engine failure, Evertz switched to his two compatriots' cars and finished the race ninth overall. At the end of the year he finally resigned from racing.
