Passion
Passion (increased, but as a concept coming off: fervor ) is a the mind completely poignant emotion . It encompasses forms of love and hate , but is also used for religious, moral or political enthusiasm and describes the intensive pursuit of goals by, for example, art lovers, collectors or animal lovers. In today's everyday language use, a connection with “ suffering ” from which it is derived is hardly present; "Passion" is sometimes neutral, usually even has a positive connotation (see also love relationship ).
The ancient philosophy of the Stoa saw the mastery of passions ( affect control ) as an important goal in life. The moderation (in particular the desire ) is one of the four Platonic cardinal virtues .
René Descartes interpreted the “passions” as natural mental outflows of the creatural corporeality of man, but obliges man - as a being at the same time endowed with a soul - to control it through the will and to overcome it through rational impulses such as B. selfless renunciation or generous forgiveness .
The expression was introduced into the German language by Philipp von Zesen (1619–1689) for the Latin word passio . In fiction and theater , passion is a frequent topic or subject .
