Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km race in 1974
The ninth 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps , also Grand Prix de Spa, Circuit National de Francorchamps , took place on May 5, 1974 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and was the second round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
Jacky Ickx had already won the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps twice by 1974 and was considered one of the specialists at the Spa racetrack. 1967 he won the race together with Dick Thompson in the Mirage M1 and 1968 as a partner of Brian Redman in Ford GT40 Mk.I . Ickx had lost his Ferrari contract at the end of 1973 and switched to Lotus in 1974 in Formula 1 . In the 1974 sports car world championship , he competed for Autodelta in the season opening race in Monza and finished second overall with his teammate Rolf Stommelen in the Alfa Romeo T33 / TT / 12 . In Spa he replaced the sick Jean-Pierre Beltoise at Matra Sports at short notice and celebrated his first win of the season. He shared the cockpit of the Matra-Simca MS670C with the young Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jarier .
