The 28th 1000 km race of Spa-Francorchamps , also 1000 KM of Spa-Francorchamps, Circuit Spa-Francorchamps , took place on May 7, 2011 in Spa-Francorchamps and was the second round of the Le Mans Series of this year.

The race

As in previous years, the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps was the preparatory race for the Le Mans 24-hour race for the Peugeot and Audi factory teams . Both racing departments had built new prototypes for the sports car season . The Peugeot 908 was due to the rule changes a smaller diesel engine than the previous model 908 HDi FAP . The 3.7 liter V8 engine developed 405 kW (550 hp). A fin was added above the engine cover to prevent the vehicle from rolling over in the event of an accident. In addition, the same tire size was now used on the front axle as on the rear axle. The Audi R18 TDI , which also had a diesel engine, was the first Audi prototype with a roof since the Audi R8C used in 1999 .

Both Peugeot and Audi used three works cars each. In addition, there was a 908 HDi FAP registered by Oreca at Peugeot . Alexander Wurz , Marc Gené , Anthony Davidson , Franck Montagny , Stéphane Sarrazin , Nicolas Minassian , Sébastien Bourdais , Simon Pagenaud and Pedro Lamy competed for Peugeot . The Oreca-Peugeot was driven by Nicolas Lapierre , Loïc Duval and Olivier Panis . The Audi driver trios were Rinaldo Capello / Tom Kristensen / Allan McNish , Timo Bernhard / Romain Dumas / Mike Rockenfeller and Marcel Fässler / André Lotterer / Benoît Tréluyer .

Matthieu Lahaye's serious accident overshadowed qualifying training. The Frenchman had an accident in the Pescarolo 01 in the Eau Rouge and was taken to a hospital for observation for one night, but had not suffered any injuries. The repair of the barriers caused a long hiatus that put the factory Peugeot in trouble. In contrast to the Audis, which drove their fastest laps at the beginning of practice, Peugeot had waited. When light rain set in after the interruption, the 908 only got 13th, 18th and 48th starting positions.

The race started with some restlessness. On the first lap, Allan McNish and Timo Bernhard in the Audis with the numbers 3 and 1 left the track at the end of the Kemmel straight and had to find their way back across the meadow. After an hour, Alexander Wurz took the lead from 13th on the grid. At racing speed, the three factory Peugeot were far faster than the Audi. At half time, all three Peugeot were in the lead, with Montagny, Sarrazin and Minassian in the number 8 car moving up from 48th place on the grid. The Audi also suffered from technical problems that led to unplanned pit stops. The second Peugeot with the number 9 had a suspension damage in the last quarter of the race. Simon Pagenaud managed to drive the vehicle back to the pits at a slow speed. The damage could be repaired, but the team fell back to eighth place overall. Nevertheless, there was a double victory for Peugeot. Number 7 won over number 8.
