Mugello 1000 km race in 1975
The 1000 km Mugello race in 1975 , also known as 1000 km Mugello , took place on March 23 at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello . The race was the second round of the sports car world championship this year.
The race
The second race of the season in 1975 ended with a surprise due to the unexpected overall victory of the new Alpine-Renault A441 . The official distance of the event was 1000 kilometers, but the race ended after 150 laps and 786 kilometers driven.
The team of the former German racing driver Willi Kauhsen took over the racing activities of Alfa Romeo in 1975 . For his project, Kauhsen hired experienced sports car drivers for both of the Alfa Romeo T33 / TT / 12 CC . Henri Pescarolo had no contract after the end of the sports car activities of Matra Sports and shared the cockpit of the car with the number 2 with Derek Bell . Arturo Merzario and Jacky Ickx drove the second Alfa .
Alpine made a comeback in the sports car world championship , now with financial support from Renault . The French car manufacturer took over the majority of the shares in Alpine in 1973. The A441 was successfully used in the 1974 European sports car championship . Alain Serpaggi won the championship with it. In Mugello the car was used for the first time in the world championship. As a partner of Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Gérard Larrousse, another former Matra pilot, got a new job. The Swiss racing team Equipe Elf-Switzerland reported a second A441 for Lella Lombardi and Marie-Claude Charmasson . A new team was formed around the German Dr. Hermann Dannesberger, who, with financing from Martini & Rossi, registered two Porsche 908 / 3-6s for Herbert Müller , Leo Kinnunen and Gijs van Lennep .
The race ended with the first championship victory for an Alpine since the success of Roger Delageneste in the A210 at the 500 km race at the Nürburgring in 1967 . At the finish, Jabouille and Larrousse were one lap ahead of Arturo Merzario and Jacky Ickx's Alfa Romeo.
