1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1975

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Walter Czadek had a fatal accident in training on a BMW 2002 Ti

The 21st 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also Int. ADAC 1000 km Nürburgring, World Championship, Nürburgring Nordschleife , took place on June 1, 1975 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

With three Alfa Romeo T33 / TT / 12 that came Kauhsen to race at the Nurburgring. In addition to the previous regular drivers Arturo Merzario , Jacques Laffite , Henri Pescarolo and Derek Bell , two current Formula 1 drivers joined the team. Jody Scheckter started for Tyrrell in the world championship and shared the cockpit of the car with the number 3 with McLaren driver Jochen Mass . Mass also had a driver contract with Ford Germany , but was released from team boss Mike Kranefuss for the race due to a lack of opportunities .

The problems of the Porsche team at the Hessian real estate agent Dr. Hermann Dannesberger continued at the Nürburgring. After a dispute between the drivers, Gijs van Lennep was released from his contract after the 1000 km race in Monza . Herbert Müller received an official warning from the Porsche board of directors after he said that the Porsche 908 / 3-6 with turbocharger was “Porsche scrap”. Before the race, Porsche stopped technical support and the team had to make budget with the last few spare parts.

Fatal accident during training

Walter Czadek had a fatal accident on Saturday morning . On his third lap, the transmission of his car blocked at high speed on the Döttinger Höhe. The vehicle hit a barrier, overturned and landed heavily damaged between trees. Czadek, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to the Adenau hospital with serious injuries , where he died that afternoon; he was 32 years old. In his hometown of Hassel he ran a company that repaired vehicle electrics and in his spare time he drove touring car races . A BMW 2002 Ti was registered for him and Karl Richter from the “Rheydter Club” for the 1000 km race .

The course of the race

The race ended with another overall victory for the Kauhsen-Alfa-Romeo team. However, this victory was primarily due to mistakes by the competition. The Alpine-Renault A442 from Gérard Larrousse and Jean-Pierre Jabouille led for a long time . The duo had already gained a lead of over two minutes when the Alpine technicians needed three unplanned pit stops to repair a broken weld on a pitot tube that supplied the left cylinder side with compressed combustion air. A whole lap was lost.

Four laps led by Georg Loos used Mirage Gulf GR7 with Howden Ganley at the wheel when race director Len Bailey underwent a serious mistake. He miscalculated during the pit stops and brought the leading car to the pits completely unnecessarily. Ganley, seeing his teammate Tim Schenken waiting, untied his seat belt to get out of the car. When the error was recognized, it had to be laboriously put on again. Half a minute was lost in the maneuver, enough to put Merzario and Laffite's Alfa Romeo in the lead. At the finish line they had a lead of 40 seconds over the Loos-Gulf after 44 laps.
