1981 Mugello 6-hour race
The 6-hour race of Mugello 1981 , also 6 Ore Mugello , took place on April 12th at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello and was the third round of the sports car world championship and the fourth round of the Italian Group 6 championship of that year.
The race
The third world championship round of the season was far from having a large field of starters like the two races before that, the 24-hour race in Daytona and the 12-hour race in Sebring . Although only 26 vehicles were registered and 21 of them started on the day of the race, the respective class winner was won in no fewer than seven racing classes. In the class for sports cars over 2-liter displacement, there was only one racing car in Mugello. A Porsche 908 that was driven by German Siegfried Brunn and later racing team owner Eddie Jordan . How far this racing model of Porsche was now getting on in years, you can refer to the fact that on the 2-liter Osella PA9 of Giorgio Francia , who on the pole position , was lacking in training more than six seconds.
The big favorite for the overall win was the works - Group 5 - Lancia Beta Montecarlo of Michele Alboreto and Piercarlo Ghinzani . However, after problems with the gearshift, the car only crossed the finish line in second place and was subsequently disqualified for not changing the gearbox in accordance with the rules. Victory went to the factory Osella PA9 from Francia and Lella Lombardi , ahead of the Porsche 935 from the two Britons John Cooper and Dudley Wood and the Group 5 BMW 320i from Anton Fischhaber and Mario Ketterer .
