Udo Schütz (born January 11, 1937 in Selters ) is a former German automobile racing driver , sailor and today's entrepreneur.

Career

Schütz began his racing career in the early 1960s. He had his first successes with a Porsche 904 and was soon hired by Porsche for works outings. In 1967 he won the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring with Joe Buzzetta in a Porsche 910 and in 1969 with Gerhard Mitter in a Porsche 908/2 the Targa Florio . Schütz won a total of 50 races and the German Sports Car Championship in 1966, and he also helped Porsche win the 1969 World Endurance Championship. The relatively heavy and tall Schütz, also known as the “Selters Bull”, was, however, rather unsuitable for the flat racing cars, especially when the cars were closed. Even without a helmet, his head protruded beyond the windshield during training trips to the 1967 Targa Florio in the Porsche 910 with the number 184, which is now in the Porsche Museum.

When 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1969 he had an accident after 199 laps in the 908 long-tail after a collision with the Porsche 917 of Gérard Larrousse at high speed hard was thrown at the rollover out of the car, but only slightly injured. Since Gerhard Mitter had a fatal accident during training for the German Grand Prix, Schütz retired from racing. He stuck to his decision even when Scuderia Ferrari was looking for suitable drivers for the Ferrari 512S in 1970 .

Schütz concentrated on the Schütz-Werke in their native Selters (Westerwald) , a nationally important supplier of containers. "Container" was also the name of his racing yacht, which won the Admiral's Cup for Germany in 1993 together with Pinta and Rubin XII . In 2008, Schütz had another "container" built using the most modern materials.
