The 2011 British Grand Prix took place on July 10th at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone and was the ninth race of the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the European Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 77 points from Jenson Button and 77 points from Mark Webber . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 89 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 166 points ahead of Ferrari .
From this Grand Prix, the double-declutching ban came into force. Previously, it was possible to keep the engine running even when braking, so that the exhaust gases could flow into the diffuser . After a dispute between team bosses Christian Horner (Red Bull-Renault) and Martin Whitmarsh (McLaren-Mercedes) over an exemption for the Renault engine on Friday afternoon , this exemption was withdrawn on Saturday. Originally, Renault was allowed to open the throttle valve up to 50% and fire six out of eight cylinders, while the Mercedes and Cosworth engines were only allowed to open the throttle valve up to 10% and fire four out of eight cylinders. An exception rule for Mercedes engines, which are allowed to reignite their engine during braking due to reliability problems on the crankshaft housing, remains in place. The technical director of Red Bull, Adrian Newey , felt reminded of the 1994 Formula 1 World Championship with these changes to the regulations . At that time, the traction control and active wheel suspension developed by Williams-Renault were forbidden.
At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with hard (silver) and soft (yellow) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions .
Daniel Ricciardo made his Grand Prix debut at the British Grand Prix. He replaced Narain Karthikeyan at HRT-Cosworth . Ricciardo previously took part in the first free practice sessions of the season for Toro Rosso .
Ferrari changed its official name from Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro to Scuderia Ferrari ahead of the Grand Prix . The team last competed under this name at the 1996 Japanese Grand Prix . Ferrari and Philip Morris International responded to criticism from anti-tobacco organizations. Ferrari also celebrated the 60th anniversary of their first Formula 1 victory. On July 14, 1951, José Froilán González won the Grand Prix of Great Britain for the first time as a driver for the Italian racing team.
With Michael Schumacher (three times), Rubens Barrichello , Fernando Alonso , Lewis Hamilton , Vettel and Webber (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session, which took place under wet conditions, Webber set the fastest lap ahead of Schumacher and Barrichello. This training took over Nico Hülkenberg the Force India of Adrian Sutil and Karun Chandhok the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen . In the second free practice session, most of the drivers did not go out onto the track until the last third, as the track was again wet and the drivers wanted to use fewer tires. After all , Felipe Massa was the fastest pilot ahead of Nico Rosberg and Kamui Kobayashi . In the third free practice session, in which the drivers consistently used slicks, Vettel prevailed against Alonso and Webber.
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Webber set the fastest lap. As it began to rain at the end of the section, the pilots were no longer able to improve their times in the final phase. The HRT, Virgin and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Jarno Trulli were eliminated. In the second qualifying segment, in which slicks were used again, Massa took over the leadership position. The Renault drivers as well as Kovalainen, Barrichello, Schumacher, Sergio Pérez and Sutil were eliminated. In the third section, Webber finally achieved pole position in front of Vettel and Alonso. There was also light rain in this segment in the last few minutes.
run
Alonso won the race ahead of Vettel and Webber. He achieved the first win of the season for Scuderia Ferrari.
The race started in wet conditions. However, the track dried out during the race, so the drivers switched to slicks in the first half of the race.
Vettel took over the lead from Webber at the start and lost it to Alonso in an incorrect pit stop. In the further course of the race he did not manage to catch up with his opponent.
In Fernando Alonso, another driver won for the fifth time in a row. After Michael Schumacher was the last driver to win the Grand Prix at least twice ( 1998 , 2002 and 2004 ), Alonso has now succeeded (previously in 2006 ). This interrupted the streak of eight different winners since the 2003 British Grand Prix .
