The 2011 Turkish Grand Prix took place on May 8th at the Istanbul Park Circuit in Istanbul and was the fourth race of the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Chinese Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 21 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 30 points ahead of Jenson Button . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 20 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 55 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Turkish Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds hard (silver) and soft (yellow), as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions . In addition, the teams received a new variant of the hard tire compound for test purposes on Friday .

With Felipe Massa (three times), Button and Hamilton (once each), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice session, which took place under wet conditions, Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap ahead of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher . Vettel caused an interruption with an accident in Turn 8 , in which his vehicle was badly damaged. This training took over Nico Hülkenberg the Force India of Adrian Sutil , Daniel Ricciardo the Toro Rosso of Jaime Alguersuari and Karun Chandhok the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen . In the second free practice, Button set the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Hamilton. In the third free practice session, Vettel took the lead from Schumacher and Mark Webber .

Qualifying

In the first qualifying segment, Massa drove the fastest lap. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots and Kamui Kobayashi were eliminated. Kobayashi did not set a time and thus failed to qualify within the 107 percent rule . He was subsequently given permission to start the race. In the second section, Vettel sat at the head of the field. The Toro Rosso, Force India and Williams pilots and Sergio Pérez were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel kept the lead and achieved his fourth pole position this season ahead of Webber and Rosberg.

run

Vettel won the race in front of his teammates Webber and Alonso.

The race was characterized by several pit stops, as most of the drivers used a four-stop strategy. Vettel controlled the race from pole position and was only out of the lead for one lap due to a pit stop. While Webber and Alonso dueled for second place behind Vettel, there was a larger gap to fourth place.

Due to different tire levels and the use of the Drag Reduction System (DRS), several overtaking maneuvers occurred in the race.
