Reports
background
For the first time, the French Grand Prix took place at the Circuit Paul Ricard, which opened last year and which set new standards in terms of safety with its run-off zones, which were modern for the time.
Emerson Fittipaldi returned to the Lotus factory team after a full recovery from the consequences of a private car accident , where the Lotus 56 turbine car was not used in this race , as the damage from the Dutch Grand Prix two weeks earlier had not been repaired.
At March , Andrea de Adamich and Ronnie Peterson were the first two works drivers to compete in a car equipped with an Alfa Romeo engine.
The two French guest starters Max Jean and François Mazet drove their first and only Grand Prix this weekend in two non-factory-supported March.
Mario Andretti was absent from a USAC race at Pocono Raceway .
training
As has been the case several times this season, the front row was composed of Jackie Stewart and the two Ferraris of Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni , who had dominated the training session. Graham Hill and Pedro Rodríguez qualified for the second row . The two Lotus from Fittipaldi and Reine Wisell , with ranks 15 and 17, once again only reached the back of the starting positions.
run
Stewart immediately took the lead, followed by Regazzoni. Since Ickx had to struggle with engine problems right from the start of the race, which led to retirement after only four laps, he was unable to intervene in the duel for third place between Rodríguez and Jean-Pierre Beltoise .
On lap 20, Peterson's Alfa Romeo engine exploded. Regazzoni then turned on its lost oil and was eliminated. The same thing happened to Hill shortly afterwards. However, he did manage to pits his car for repairs. Second place went to Rodríguez without a fight, who was eliminated a short time later with a defective ignition. Since Cevert was then in second place, there was ultimately a Tyrrell double victory. Third place went to Emerson Fittipaldi, who started in a hopeless position after an impressive race to catch up.
Registration list
1 The Tyrrell 001 marked with a "T" behind the start number was available to Jackie Stewart as a T-Car , but was never used.
