The United States Auto Club (abbr .: USAC ) is an American motorsport association . The association was founded in 1955 after the American Automobile Association ceased to organize automobile racing due to the serious accidents in Indianapolis and Le Mans.

history

USAC founder was Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman. In addition to the highest class, the Champ Cars , sports car races , sprint car , midget car and stock car races were also announced.

A crisis erupted in the late 1970s after Hulman died and USAC top executives were killed in a plane crash in 1978. The owners of most of the racing teams, who had previously criticized USAC policies, took over and formed the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) to organize the 1979 season. It came to a conflict, the CART teams enforced by court order admission to the Indy 500 1979. It was agreed that CART organized the championship seasons and the USAC the Indy 500 as their most important part.

When Indianapolis owner Tony George founded the Indy Racing League in 1996 , the USAC initially took over the organization, but was relieved of its function after timekeeping problems in Texas.
