Leslie "Gene" Hartley (born January 28, 1926 in Roanoke , Indiana , † March 13, 1993 ibid) was an American racing driver .

Career

Gene Hartley was the son of midget car racing driver Ted Hartley and won the USAC National Midget Series in 1959 . He drove in 32 races in the AAA National Series and in the USAC Championship in the 1950s and 1960s . He achieved his best placement in 1956 in Langhorne in second place.

The 500-mile Indianapolis he was ten times at the start. His best placement was tenth in 1957 in a Lesovsky - Offenhauser . In 1953 he was able to take ninth place together with Tony Bettenhausen , with Bettenhausen driving around three quarters of the distance.

Since his active time as a driver in Indianapolis is almost identical to the ranking of the race for the drivers' world championship , eight of his ten Indianapolis starts also count as Grand Prix starts.
