Marshall Teague (born February 22, 1922 in Daytona Beach , Florida , † February 11, 1959 ) was an American racing driver who was active in NASCAR , the AAA and the USAC . He is one of the drivers selected as the 50 greatest NASCAR drivers in 1998 .

NASCAR

Teague was one of the founding members of NASCAR and took part in the second ever NASCAR race on the Daytona Beach Road Course , which he finished in 14th place. In the 1950 NASCAR Grand National season he took part in three races. His best result was a 17th place on the Occoneechee Speedway . In the same year he signed a contract with Hudson Motor Car Co. , which supported him from then on, where he drove a Hudson Hornet , a vehicle that was superior to many of its competitors. In the 1951 NASCAR Grand National season , he drove this car in 15 of a total of 41 races. He won five times and was in the top ten every time he crossed the finish line. One of those five victories was at the Daytona Beach Road Course, where he drove his very first NASCAR race. Because of his good performance on this route, he was called "King of the Beach" (King of the Beach). Despite the good performance, Teague had little reason to be happy, however, as he was deprived of all driver points because he started in a race held by the American Automobile Association in the AAA season in 1951 , i.e. a race in a competing racing series. In the 1952 NASCAR Grand National season he drove only four races, of which he won two, one in Speedway Park in Jacksonville , Florida and one on the Daytona Beach Road Course. After these four races, he left NASCAR due to differences with NASCAR chairman Bill France senior . In his NASCAR career he drove a total of 23 races, of which he won seven. He finished nine times in the top 5 and eleven times in the top 10. He started from pole position three times.

Champ Car

In the following years Teague took part in a few races in the AAA series and the USAC . In 1953 and 1957 he competed in the Indianapolis 500 . When he first participated in 1953, he came in 18th place, in 1957 in seventh place. In 1954 he was not originally qualified, but took over the wheel twice during the race for a competitor who had been relieved due to the enormous heat that day. Since the Indy 500 was part of the Formula 1 drivers' world championship from 1950 to 1960, its statistics also include 3 Grand Prix starts. He couldn't score any points.

Teague died on February 11, 1959 on the then new Daytona International Speedway while trying to set a new speed record. The accident occurred eleven days before the first Daytona 500 .
