The NASCAR - Grand National season review 1951 began on 11 February 1951 at the Daytona Beach Road Course in Daytona Beach , Florida , and ended on 25 November 1951 at the Lakeview Speedway in Mobile , Alabama . Herb Thomas won the drivers championship, making it the third driver after Red Byron and Bill Rexford to do so. Oldsmobile secured the brand name. NASCAR punished various drivers over the course of the season for various serious rule violations. One of them was Marshall Teague , a founding member of NASCAR. Teague started in a race held by the American Automobile Association in the 1951 AAA season , that is, in a competing racing series. Because of this, all driver points were revoked. Former champions Red Byron, Billy Carden , Bob Flock , Ed Samples , Jack Smith , Curtis Turner and Jerry Wimbish also suffered the same penalty for violating the rules.
