Chick Lyall

Chick Lyall (* 1958 ) is a Scottish jazz pianist and composer.

Lyall studied composition with Lyell Cresswell and piano with Gusztav Fenyo at the University of Glasgow . He continued his education with George Hadjinikos in Manchester and Joe Maneri at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

From 1986 to 1987 he was Music Director of Drumley House School in Ayrshire and from 1996 to 1998 he taught at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama . In 2000 he was artist in residence at Govan High School in Glasgow, and from 2000 to 2003 he gave guest lectures at the University of Glasgow .

Lyall composed numerous commissioned works, including a. for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra , the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland , for the Glasgow Jazz Festival and the Norwegian group Masqualero . In 2004 he received the Creative Scotland Award for composing a piece for two pianos with Steven Osborne . He also composed film scores and pieces for dance ensembles.

Lyall led the group Tilting Ground and was a member of the electro-acoustic trio Greenroom . He has worked with musicians such as Tony Scott , Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen , The Scottish Jazz Quartet (with Phil and Tom Bancroft , Tore Brunborg , Joe Maneri , Laura McDonald , Martin Kershaw , Rick Margitza , Joakim Milder and Petter Wettre ). As a solo pianist he performed a. a. at the London Jazz Festival , the Bath International Festival , the Brecon Jazz Festival , the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and the Glasgow Jazz Festival . He also gives concerts as a harpsichordist with works by Bach , Handel and Scarlatti .
