from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Glaucus of Karystos was the son of Demylos and one of the most famous athletes in ancient times . Due to its strength and size of 2.15 meters, it was considered a descendant of Glaucoma of Anthedon .

Glaukos was a farmer, and when the ploughshare came loose while working in the fields, he reattached it with his bare hand. His father saw this and decided to send him to the Olympics . In his first fight at the 65th Olympic Games (520 BC) he was inexperienced in fistfighting . First Glaukos was badly injured by his opponent before he knocked him down with one blow and won the competition. Furthermore, he is said to have won the fistfight twice in the Pythian Games , eight times in the Nemean Games and eight times in the Isthmian Games .

Under Gelon , he became the tyrant of Kamarina and was killed in a revolt. His son Philo dedicated a statue to him, the work of Glaucias of Aegina in Olympia .
