history

Founder was the owner of the jazz pub Four Bars Inn in Cardiff Jedd Williams. The inspiration was the Breda Jazz Festival , which was dedicated to traditional jazz. At first it was called the New Orleans Beneath the Beacons Festival , alluding to the Welsh mountain range Brecon Beacons and the first focus on traditional jazz - the first festival in 1984 included Humphrey Lyttelton and singer George Melly , who lived nearby.

The BBC broadcast several programs from the festival as early as 1988. In 1996 a new building, the Jazz Gallery, was opened for jazz events only. In 2006 HSBC was a sponsor and the festival received sponsorship names as an addition. In 2007, Joe Lovano was the first artist in residence. Jazz musicians also hold master classes and workshops during the festival from the mid-2000s.

For the 25th anniversary in 2008, Joan Armatrading and Courtney Pine performed, among others . In 2009 a Blue Plaque (on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kind of Blue ) was awarded to 12 historical jazz venues in Great Britain.

A Brecon Fringe Festival has also split off with concerts in cafes, galleries, pubs and hotels. The festival organizations changed several times over the years, as the festival was often in financial difficulties. Between 2009 and 2011 it was organized by the Hays Festival and funded by the Arts Council of Wales and from 2012 by the Orchard agency in Cardiff .
