The 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup began on February 19 with the Daytona 500 . The season ended on November 12th with the NAPA 400 . 2005 was the last season with a high number of points in the drivers' standings because the Chase was introduced from the 2006 season . Rookie of the year was Kyle Busch and the title Most Popular Driver went to Dale Earnhardt junior .

Racing calendar

All races take place in the United States . Races 16 ( Sonoma Raceway ) and 22 ( Watkins Glen International ) are the only ones that do not take place on oval courses .
