Career
Young years
Regan Smith began karting at the age of four, and in the course of his young career he was able to win several regional and national titles early on. His parents encouraged him by moving to Mooresville , North Carolina in 1995, where the conditions for motor sports enthusiasts are better, as many Nascar teams are based here. Smith joined the World Karting Association in the same year and won more victories and championships.
He won the WKA Grand National Championship in 1996 and the WKA Manufacturer Cup in 1997. In 1998, he also managed to finish victoriously in the Canadian Grand National Karting Championship.
In his further career he drove in the Allison Legacy Series and the USAR Hooters ProCup Series, where he was able to get four poles in 2001. In the former, he was able to assert himself in 2001 as champion and also as Rookie of the Year.
Nascar
2002 to 2005
Between 2002 and 2005 Smith drove selected trucks and several Busch Series races. Before 2006, he never got above a 33rd place in the overall standings of the Busch Series and never took part in the entire season distance. It was similar for Smith with the trucks. Here his stakes were even more limited.
Since 2006
In 2006 Smith drove his first and to date only complete Busch Series season, which he finished in 20th place overall. In the following year he came to his first use in the highest series of NASCAR , known until 2007 under the name Nextel Cup . He drove his first race at Bristol Motor Speedway .
In 2008 he had a total of 34 appearances and in his first almost complete season he secured the title of Rookie of the Year. In the overall ranking, he only reached 34th place.
In 2009 , Smith could no longer build on his preseason. He came only to 18 missions and finished 39th in the championship standings.
In 2010 he finally drove his first full season with a total of 36 missions. Here he also achieved his best result in the annual ranking to date. He finished the season in 28th place.
The preliminary high point of his career was his victory in the 2011 season at the Showtime 500 at Darlington Raceway in the spring. In February he was able to secure a top 10 result at the Daytona 500 for the first time , which, in addition to a first in his Cup career, was also a first for Furniture Row Racing.
