Woodie Wilson

Woodie Wilson (born August 8, 1925 in Mobile , Alabama , † September 13, 1994 ) was an American racing driver whose greatest success was the award of NASCAR Rookie of the Year of the year 1961.

Career

Wilson made his debut in the Strictly Stock Series, now known as the Sprint Cup , on the Daytona Beach Road Course on July 10, 1949 . He managed to keep his car out of accidents so that he finished the race in 17th place. In the following years he no longer appeared in any major division of NASCAR. It wasn't until 1955 that he competed again in the highest division of NASCAR, the Grand National. This race took place at the Memphis-Arkansas Speedway , but was over for Wilson after only 18 laps due to an engine overheating. He then did not take part in any Grand National races again for a few years before returning in 1961 and contesting five races. Those five races, one of which he finished in the top 10, were enough for him to receive the 1961 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award . In the 1962 season, Wilson only contested three races. One of them was a qualifying race for the Daytona 500 , which he finished in seventh place, which meant the best position of his career in the Grand National. On October 28, 1962, he drove for the last time in a Grand National race. Woodie Wilson died on September 13, 1994.
