2002 until today
In 2002 Newman won his first race in what was then the Busch Series , as well as the first race in the Winston Cup . This year he secured pole position six times, breaking Davey Allison's record . After Dale Earnhardt junior , he is the first driver to win the All-Star Race as a rookie. At the end of the year he won the Rookie of the Year Award as the best newcomer .
He started the 2003 season with a serious accident at the Daytona 500. Over the course of the season he celebrated eight wins and eleven poles. However, he was only sixth in the championship due to seven failures. In 2006 he drove his first winless season. This happened after his long-time team boss left him and moved to Michael Waltrip Racing . He finished the season in eighteenth in the championship.
After an almost win at Lowe's Motor Speedway , the 2007 season did not bring him a good result either. His first win since 2005 was the Daytona 500 in 2008 .
Newman is also called "Rocket Man" because of his strength over a single lap in qualifying and the resulting number of many pole positions. He received the nickname after achieving a total of eleven pole positions in the 2003 season.
