James Dennis "Denny" Hamlin Jr. (born November 18, 1980 in Tampa , Florida ) is an American NASCAR racing driver. He drives the number 11 Toyota Camry, sponsored by FedEx , in the Sprint Cup for Joe Gibbs Racing . He is a three-time winner of the Daytona 500 .

Career

Early years

Hamlin, who grew up in Chesterfield , Virginia , began his racing career in 1988 at the age of seven with kart racing. In 1997, at the age of 16, he switched to touring car racing . In his first race at Langley Speedway, he secured pole position directly and then won the race. At the end of the season Hamlin moved to the Grand Stock Division and for the 2000 season to the Late Models . In the 2002 season he won ten races, in the following season 25 of the total of 36 races and started from pole position in 30 races.

2004

In 2004 Hamlin signed a contract for a racing driver development program with Joe Gibbs Racing and competed in five races in the Craftsman Truck Series . At the same time he drove his first race in the Busch Series at Darlington Raceway , where he drove from starting position 27 to eighth place.

2005

In the 2005 season, Hamlin drove the entire season in the Busch Series and replaced Mike Bliss in the Rockwell Automation -Chevrolet with starting number 20. The season he finished fifth in the championship. Hamlin achieved a total of eleven top 10 results and won $ 1,064,110 in prize money  . Also in 2005, Hamlin drove his first race in the Nextel Cup at Kansas Speedway in the number 11 FedEx Chevrolet after Jason Leffler had been fired. He completed a total of seven races in the Cup, of which he was among the top 10 in three. Hamlin took his first pole position at the Phoenix International Raceway .

2006

In 2006 Hamlin drove his first full season in the Nextel Cup and also competed in the Busch Series. On March 5, he won the first Busch Series race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez .

In Hamlin's first Restrictor Plate race , he caused a sensation when he left all winners of pole positions of the 2005 season behind in the 70 lap Budweiser Shootout . Hamlin is the first rookie to win this race. In May he and part of his crew raced for the team's trucks during a test drive break at Lowe's Motor Speedway . He injured his left hand between the little finger and wrist and had to be sewn with 19 stitches. Despite this injury, Hamlin finished second behind Dale Earnhardt junior at the Crown Royal 400 . On June 11th, he won his first career win in the Nextel Cup at the Pocono 500 at the Pocono Raceway . On July 23, he won the Pennsylvania 500 , also at the Pocono Raceway. Hamlin is the second driver after Jimmie Johnson to win both races on a circuit in one season as a rookie. In addition to the two victories, Hamlin was also on pole position in both races and in the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 . He finished the season third in the championship and was also named rookie of the year in the Nextel Cup. His third place is the best result for a rookie in NASCAR history. Hamlin is also the first rookie to make it into the Chase for the Nextel Cup .

2007

Hamlin started the 2007 season with a 28th place at the Daytona 500 . The third win of his career was the Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway . Also in his second full season he made the jump into the Chase for the Nextel Cup. In Chase itself it was only enough for three top 10 results, in five races he did not make it into the top 20. At the end of the season, he finished twelfth in the championship and was the last of the Chase participants.

2008

In the Sprint Cup season 2008 he drove his first win of the season with the Goody's Cool Orange 500 and finished the season in eighth place. In the Nationwide Series he won the Lipton Tea 250 in Richmond , the Heluva Good! 200 in Dover , on American Independence Day the Winn-Dixie 250 in Daytona and the Kansas Lottery 300 in Kansas . He finished the season in 19th place.

2009

In the 2009 Sprint Cup season , he celebrated his first victory at Pocono Raceway at the Pennsylvania 500 . It was followed by three more victories at the Richmond International Raceway , the Martinsville Speedway and in the season finale, the Ford 400 at the Homestead Miami Speedway .
