Erik Jones (born May 30, 1996 in Byron , Michigan ) is an American automobile racing driver who drives a Toyota Camry with starting number 20 for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series .

Jones is the master of the Camping World Truck Series in 2015 and the Rookie of the Year of the Xfinity Series 2016th

At the age of 7, Jones started to compete in quarter-midget races and at the age of 13 he started driving stock cars .

He was able to draw attention to himself early on through successes. At the age of 15, he started in the ARCA Racing Series in 2012 , making him the youngest driver in the history of the sport. Due to his age, however, he was only allowed to drive on routes that were no longer than a mile, in ten starts he achieved four top 5 results. He attracted particular attention at the end of the year when he defeated Cup Series pilot Kyle Busch to win the prestigious Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway .

Camping World Truck Series

In March 2013, Kyle Busch Motorsports announced that Jones would compete in five races in the Camping World Truck Series . He finished in the top ten in all of these races.

He celebrated his first victory at the Phoenix International Raceway , at the age of 17 years, five months and nine days he was the youngest winner of a race in the three NASCAR Topligas. This record was beaten by Cole Custer in 2014 .

In the 2014 season, Jones competed in all races permitted to him, and was only allowed to drive on larger tracks after his 18th birthday. He won races in Iowa , Las Vegas and Phoenix that year .

In 2015 he took part in all races, after his victories at the Iowa Speedway and the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park , he took the championship lead for the first time. Jones took his third win of the season at Texas Motor Speedway . He prevailed over the reigning champion Matt Crafton and Tyler Reddick and won the championship. This makes him the youngest NASCAR champion in the truck series and broke Austin Dillon's record .

Xfinity Series

In addition to the races in the Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports , Jones also contested three races in the Xfinity Series for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2014 , all of which he finished in the top 10.

He won his first Xfinity Series race in April 2015 at Texas Motor Speedway , and this year he also managed a so-called "weekend swap" in which he won the Truck Series in Iowa and the Xfinity Series in Chicagoland on the same weekend won.

In the 2016 season he starts full-time in the No. 20 for Joe Gibbs Racing, he achieved four wins, which he secured first place in the chase. He reached the last lap in the Chase, but there he was stopped late in the race with a restart, with his resulting ninth place in the race he only achieved fourth place in the overall standings. Jones received the Rookie of the Year Award this season .

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Jones made his unofficial Sprint Cup debut in April 2015 when he replaced the neck cramped Denny Hamlin in Bristol . After taking over the car from Hamlin, he fought his way up from 37th to 26th, but this result was awarded to the starting driver, Hamlin.

He made his official debut later that year when he replaced the injured Kyle Busch in Kansas . He started in twelfth place, led the race for a short time, but then had an accident while in fourth place and was only fortieth.

In November he replaced Matt Kenseth , who was suspended for two races due to an accident with Joey Logano in Martinsville . After a late tire blowout, he finished twelfth in Texas and finished the race in Phoenix in nineteenth place.

In August 2016 it was announced that Jones would drive a number 77 Toyota Camry for Furniture Row Racing for the 2017 season .

On July 11, 2017, his move to Joe Gibbs Racing was announced, replacing Matt Kenseth in the number 20.
