William Clyde "Chase" Elliott II (born November 28, 1995 in Dawsonville , Georgia ) is an American automobile racing driver who is currently active in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series . He drives No. 9 for Hendrick Motorsports , and in 2016 he won the Rookie of the Year Award . In 2014 he won the Xfinity Series ; he was the first driver to win a national NASCAR series as a rookie . In 2014 and 2015 he was named "Most Popular Driver" of the Xfinity Series, and in the Cup in 2018 and 2019, he was the son of Bill Elliott , the 1988 Winston Cup Champion.

Career

Early years

Elliott started karting when he was 8 years old and signed a contract with Hendrick Motorsports in 2011 when he was 15 years old . This was followed by a rapid rise through various national stock car series, in 2013 he became champion in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East .

Camping World Truck Series

In 2013 he drove 9 races in the Camping Wold Truck Series , on his fifth start he won pole position in Bristol , and already won his sixth race by overtaking Ty Dillon in the last corner at Canadien Tire Motorsport Park . At the time, he was the youngest driver to win a Truck Series race, but this record was broken by Cole Custer the following year .

Xfinity Series

Elliott's 2014 Nationwide Car on Road America

In January 2014 it was announced that Elliott would compete in the 2014 Nationwide Series for JR Motorsports . That season he won races at Texas Motor Speedway , Darlington Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway , in the end he won the championship ahead of teammate Regan Smith . He was the youngest NASCAR champion in history, breaking Brian Vickers ' record and the first driver to become a champion in his rookie season. The same feat was achieved in 2018 by Tyler Reddick , also in the Nationwide / Xfinity series.

In 2015, Elliott could only win the race at Richmond International Raceway ; he finished the season behind Chris Buescher in 2nd place.

In 2016 he drove selected races in No. 88 for JR Motorsports and won the season opener in Daytona .

Cup Series

In January 2015, Hendrick Motorsports announced that Elliott would compete in five races in the number 25 in the 2015 Sprint Cup season, and from 2016 he will replace the retired Jeff Gordon in the number 24.

2015

In his Sprint Cup debut at Bristol Motor Speedway , he qualified in 27th place, after an accident he finished the race in 38th. In the remaining races of this season he did not get beyond 16th place.

2016

In his first Daytona 500 , Elliott became the youngest driver in the history of the race to take pole , but in the race itself he lost control of his car after 18 laps. The front of the car was damaged in the process, so that he could only restart the race 40 laps behind and finished in 38th place.

He was able to achieve his first top 10 result in the following race in Atlanta ; so far, 15 more top 10 results have been added. His best result is a 2nd place in Michigan , although he has already collected 355 laps in the season, it was not enough for a win. Elliott was able to qualify as the driver with the most points without a win for the Chase, but was eliminated after the round of the top 12.

He won the Rookie of the Year Award that season ahead of Chris Buescher and Ryan Blaney .

2017

In 2017, after starting from pole again in the Daytona 500, Elliott finished fifth and narrowly missed Championship 4, and he was by far the best Hendrick Motorsports driver. Despite this great season, he still lacked his first win, despite finishing second five times. At the Phoenix Raceway , shortly before the end of the race, he was in the lead due to a collision with Denny Hamlin .

2018

After Chevrolet had replaced the SS with a Camaro , Elliott finally broke the knot at the 22nd race of the season at Watkins Glen International and took his first win on the 99th attempt after Martin Truex junior , who was just behind him, ran out of gas on the final lap had gone out. Like his father before that, he had finished second eight times before this victory. Two more victories followed and so Elliott seemed to have a good chance of getting into Championship 4, but at the ISM Raceway he was only 23rd and at the end of the season with sixth overall place even deteriorated by one place compared to 2017.

2019

In 2019 Elliott won three more races, like last year, one at Watkins Glen. However, he lacked consistency this year and was only tenth, but was able to prevail again against his Hendricks teammates William Byron , Alex Bowman and Jimmie Johnson ; and was only beaten by Kyle Larson among the Chevrolet pilots .

2020

In 2020, after nine races of the season, Elliott is third behind Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano . His first win of the season was at the Charlotte Motor Speedway .
